Danube Bend Day Trip
Overview
This tour focuses on one of the most popular touristical regions in Hungary: the Danube Bend, which is both a culturally and geographically beautiful area. During our trip we will visit the cities of Esztergom, Visegrad and Szentendre, all known for something very-very different.
Our trip ideally starts at around 9:00 in the morning and will end at about 17:00 with our return to Budapest. The base concept includes up to 4 guests, as we will use a personal car. For larger groups, please contact me separately as we will need to book a mini-van.
After pick-up we will head for the city of Esztergom, our first capital and where, according to legend, the first king of the Hungarians was born. Esztergom at present is known for the largest cathedral in Hungary, which we will visit. We can also climb up tot he dome and check out the lower church, built in a neo-egyptian style. Angelina Jolie was on filming here and there is a cafe at the entrance of the main street which she visited.
Once we are done with Esztergom, we will continue our journey to Visegrad, a former royal seat of Hungary in the 14th and 15th centuries. The city, which was one of the smallest towns of Hungary in te 20th c. is known for it's hilltop citadel, which is the attraction we will visit. The ruins of the royal palace can be seen under the citadel. My recommendation for lunch is the Renaissance restaurant here, with a very unique and pleasant vibe.
Next up is the city of Szentendre, known as the artists' city nowadays and one of the most enchanting spots in the vicinity of Budapest. The old town dates back to the 18th century and is marked by a number of baroque buildings. It's also the ideal place for a coffe, shopping and a stroll along the Danube.
Having visited all three of these cities, we will then return to Budapest, where our tour will finish.
