Overview
The Capital Colombo is vibrant and emerging with greater energy to become the greatest in South Asia. The name Colombo is derived from the local term KOLA AMBA, which refers to wild mango trees by locals in the early days, explained clearly in "Historic Relations of the Island Ceylon" by Robert Knox.
Mix cultures, and diverse ethnicities, populating over 10% of the Islands' population in the Colombo district. Skyscrapers and modern structures are rising high in the Colombo sky changing its traditional identity, and old colonial beauties hiding behind those new buildings but yet they are the hidden beauty of the city.

We decided in advance to do a tour by a local guide as we'd done others before. The ship prices were expensive and we would have been part of a large group.
Suneth met us at the Grand Oriental Hotel to start our 2 hr tour of the city. He picked us up in a clean, airconditioned car which was great for travelling to places further away. He sent an itinerary which we could have modified but all his recommendations were great and they matched the tour offered by the ship but at a more competitive price. He gave a commentary on each place of interest. We saw all the places we had asked for. The tour ended early as it was a Sunday but Suneth was apologetic and was prepared to continue to other places but we were happy to finish. He is an experienced guide and comes fully recommended. Thanks Suneth.
